Why the native sign language is so important?
Yesterday I watched a video about acquiring a language by deaf child.
I would like that every parent will realize that there is only ONE language for the deaf child – sign language. And just sign language should be the first one, which deaf child will ‘see’ in its life. Never mind if you are hearing mother or hard hearing father – your deaf child with its own language will grow up properly without lost childchood.
In this video he tells about ASL, but instead of ASL there could be any sign language all over the world.
Sign language is the most important part of Deaf Culture. Please, don’t ruin it.
Books about Deafness
We all see, that there is rising number of deaf students in Universities. They learn for themselves, also they spread for another people the knowing about Deaf Culture and sign language.
In turn, hearing people, especially who want to be intepreters or just want to know deaf people better, they start to read any books about Deaf Culture or learn any sign languages.
Also you can to get those books, and know yourself better, improve your sign language or just understand other deaf people who were bringing up in different community (hearing/deaf family, public/special schools).
I recommend these online bookstores:
- http://www.forestbooks.com/ – here mostly books and CD are from UK, but they deliver for all world, for me – the biggest and the best bookstore about deaf in all varietes
- http://www.deaflibrary.org/ – the biggest deaf library
You could find everything you need to find.
“The Deaf Family” – small American sitcom
Here is a small sitcom about life of American Deaf family. And what’s more – it’s extremely funny!
There are so many daily situations so they never are bored of theirselves. The first two episodes made me big laugh, due to hidden sarcasm, the next ones are much placid and educative, but still worth to watch.
Lots of laughing !
